    Sale of Tobacco Products to a person under the age of 18 and smoking in public places is prohibited in West Jaintia Hills District.

    The Department of Health and Family Welfare, in an order said, ‘As per Section 4 of the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003, no person shall smoke in public places that include Auditorium, Health Facilities, Amusement centre, Restaurants, Private and Government offices, Educational Institutions and Public Transportation.’

    It further states that, ‘no person shall sell, offer for sale or permit sale of cigarettes or any tobacco products to a person below 18 years of age. No sale of any tobacco within a radius of 100 yards of any educational institutions.’

    Any violation of this Act is a punishable offence with a fine upto Rs. 200. ADIPR
