Ri Bhoi admin shuts down illegal KHADC toll gate at Umdihar

The District Administration of Ri Bhoi on Friday sealed a toll gate set up by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) at Umdihar along National Highway-6, citing the installation as illegal and lacking government approval.
Officials took action after receiving reports that KHADC was collecting Rs 200 from every goods-laden truck passing through the gate. Accompanied by police, the district administration locked and sealed the gate.
Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said, “The check gate at Umdihar on the National Highway apparently belongs to KHADC. However, as per government rules, no check gate can be set up on National Highways or State PWD roads without proper permission and a No Objection Certificate from the competent authority. Since we received complaints and there was also a news report, we had to close it down.”
He reiterated that setting up check gates or toll booths without prior clearance is a violation of government norms and warned that similar actions will be taken against any unauthorized structures on public roads.
