UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Friday said the resignation of few leaders will not affect the party in Ri Bhoi in the upcoming 2023 Assembly polls.

“In fact, the UDP is going to come up in a very significant way in all the five constituencies in Ri Bhoi district and I hope we are going to do well in 2023,” Mawthoh said.

He said that just one or two, who are disgruntled with the party and may have other motives, will not affect the party’s prospect in any way.

On Thursday, over 100 workers including top leaders of UDP in Ri Bhoi district, resigned from the party to support the sitting PDF Umsning  MDC Macdalyne S. Mawlong, who will be contesting the assembly election in 2023 from Nongpoh constituency.

Sources informed that Mawlong is likely to contest on an NPP ticket.

Stating that it is a normal thing for people to switch from one party to another in Meghalaya, Mawthoh said this is election year and everyone is in an election mode so the pulling and pushing is happening everywhere.

“That is happening in politics but all I can say whoever has left the party, it is not really going to affect the party in any way,” he said.

Claiming that more and more leaders are joining the UDP, Mawthoh said many have joined the party and many more are inclined to join the party from all the five constituencies of Ri Bhoi district.

“You will see in due time, we will reorganize the party in a bigger way,” he added. The UDP leader further claimed that the political developments in the state are favouring the party.
