Villagers from 21 villages on Wednesday took out a protest march to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to oppose the delimitation exercise of shifting them forcefully from Mawshynrut constituency to Rambrai Constituency.

The protest was spearheaded by the Joint Action Committee (Misei, Mawsmai, Langdongdai) West Khasi Hills.

Armed with placards, the villagers staged a demonstration by sitting in the middle of the road affecting vehicular movement after they were prevented from forcefully entering the KHADC premises.

Members of the public were seen objecting the attitude of the protesters by blocking their way.

The 21 villages were falling under three polling stations of Mawshynrut constituency.

“We have decided to stage this protest after the KHADC has failed to give any heed to our demand not to shift the 21 villages to Rambrai constituency,” one of the members of the Joint committee said at the sidelines of the protest.

“We want to remain with Mawshynrut. Our rights cannot be trampled by the select committee of the KHADC,” he said.

Deputy Chief Executive Member PN Syiem has invited the protesters for talks and assured to look into the matter.

Earlier, leader of opposition Titosstarwell Chyne also met the agitating villagers outside the council’s premises.
