An umbrella of Dorbar Shnong of various villages along National Highway 6 in East Jaintia Hills District along with the KSU Narpuh Circle on Wednesday issued a seven days deadline to the Meghalaya Government and NHAI for immediate repair and restoration of the dilapidated highway from Mynkre to Malidor failing which they will close the toll gate and the National Highway beside filing of FIR against NHAI’s officials.

The ultimatum was served in a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District by the headmen and leaders of KSU Narpuh Circle.

Expressing concern over the highly deplorable conditions of the highway, the letter rued that despite the intervention of the High Court of Meghalaya, the NHAI has failed to repair and maintain the highway in a good condition.

Meghalaya HC directs State, NHAI to file reports on Jowai to Ratacherra stretch of NH-6 within 4 weeks

They demanded that there should be immediate fillings of large potholes with equal size boulders and thereafter covered with small stone chips and properly blacktopped.

They also want the NHAI to engage and deploy several machineries for the repair of the road. It is unacceptable that only a few machinery are used for the repair of the highway. Manpower should be increased so that repair work can be done at many locations at the same time.

The letter asked NHAI to rope in expert and qualified engineers to oversee the repair work so as to ensure high quality of work.

They also demand for permanent and long terms measures for the problem of Sonapyrdi Tunnel.

“We have been mistreated badly by NHAI for many years, though NHAI collects crores of money from their toll gate, they have failed to even maintain the basic condition of the road,” the letter said.
