The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for several districts in Meghalaya, warning of extremely to exceptionally heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph at isolated places on May 30.

Districts under Red Alert include East Garo Hills, East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, and West Jaintia Hills.

According to the IMD forecast, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall with chances of exceptionally heavy showers is likely over East Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills. Other districts such as West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, and West Jaintia Hills are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall with a possibility of extremely heavy rain in isolated areas.

In view of these conditions, the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) has urged all citizens to take necessary precautions and stay alert. The current weather may result in flash floods, landslides, waterlogging, lightning strikes, falling trees, and disruptions to essential services like electricity, water supply, and communications.

Residents, especially those in low-lying or landslide-prone areas and locations with ongoing construction, are advised to remain vigilant. Commuters and long-distance travelers should avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall. Outdoor activities should also be avoided.

District Authorities and Disaster Management teams are monitoring the situation closely. Emergency services are on high alert. MSDMA has advised the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow all instructions issued by the local authorities.
