    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shillong on Wednesday conducted a Financial Literacy Event at Betasing C&RD Block Multi Facility Center, South West Garo Hills. The event was a part of RBI’s efforts to create awareness on financial products, services, good financial practices, digitalization and consumer protection.

    Addressing the gathering, South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ramakrishna Chitturi stated that financial literacy was of utmost importance when it came to saving and investing hard earned money. Urging the bankers to create awareness on banking frauds He said that proper knowledge and guidance was needed to protect the people.

    Later, the deputy commissioner accompanied by Betasing C&RD Block Development Officer W R G Momin and Deputy General Manager, RBI, Shillong Brijlal Singh felicitated Self Help Group members for exceptional financial practices.    

    In his keynote address the DGM, RBI, Shillong Brijlal Singh advocated the need for timely settlement of loans by customers so as to avoid accumulation of debts. He also cautioned the people against fraudsters who seek vital information posing as bank officials.

    During the course of the programme RBI, Shillong made a presentation on various aspects of digital banking like alternative modes of payment, mobile wallets, internet banking, UPI, USSD etc. further, the customers were cautioned against scams and fictitious offers received through sms, emails, phone calls, social networking sites etc and briefed them on the procedure for lodging grievances under the Banking Ombudsman Scheme 2006, the Banking Ombudsman Scheme for Non-Banking Financial Companies 2018, the Ombudsman Scheme for Digital Transactions 2019 and the Complaint Management System (CMS) of RBI.

    As part of the event the Meghalaya Co Operative Apex Bank deployed their Mobile ATM vans at Betasing block and State Bank of India, Betasing deployed note and coin exchange counters for the benefit of the participants.
