Acclaimed screenplay writer Ranjit Sarma, known for his powerful contributions to Assamese cinema, unveiled his latest novel, The Tents at the Guwahati Press Club on Saturday. The launch drew prominent writers, critics, and cultural figures, marking a significant addition to Sarma’s literary journey.

Best known for his collaborations with filmmakers such as Bidyut Chakraborty (Rag-Birag, Nisiddha Nadi), Manju Bora (Baibhav, Anya Ek Jatra), Sanjeev Hazorika (Mimangsa), and Hemanta Kumar Das (Othello), Sarma has long been regarded as one of Assam’s most influential screenplay writers. His previous works include the Assamese novelette Amithabhar Janma Mritu and several acclaimed plays for stage and radio.

The Tents revisits Assam’s complex past, weaving a tale around Alex Goldsmith, an Assamese Christian, along with Suren Bora, a radical extremist, and Mohini Thapa. Set against the backdrop of partition and insurgency, the novel explores rebellion, betrayal, and redemption while examining identity and ideology in the region’s history.

At the launch, noted critic Bhaskar Phukan, quizmaster Aparajita Lahkar, and activist Alex Thomas joined the discussion. Economist and mentor Dilip Sarma presented a detailed review, urging younger readers to explore the novel as a gateway to understanding Assam’s insurgency years. The session was anchored by Divik Bhattacharjee, with felicitations by Nupur Boruah.

Expressing hope that the novel will strike a chord with Millennials and Gen Z, Ranjit Sarma said The Tents is meant to engage new generations with stories that reflect Assam’s struggles and resilience. The book is now available at leading bookstores and on Amazon and Flipkart.
