In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, Raj Bhavan Assam honoured 284 senior-most retired elementary education teachers across the state on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. The programme was held under the leadership of Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya as part of the Governor Assam Varishtha Shikshak Samman Yojana, launched to recognise the lifelong contribution of veteran teachers to society and nation-building.

As part of the celebration, Governor Acharya personally visited the residence of 94-year-old retired primary school teacher Rajat Chandra Goswami at Adhar Satra, Hatigarh in Jorhat, and felicitated him with a gamocha, a fruit basket, and a citation.

Simultaneously, similar felicitation programmes were held at the district, co-district, and block levels across Assam. Senior officials of the state government, acting under the directions of Raj Bhavan, visited the homes of the teachers to present the honours.

At the district level, 35 senior-most retired primary teachers were felicitated by Deputy Commissioners and senior officers. At the co-district level, 126 teachers received honours from Additional Deputy Commissioners or designated officials. At the block level, 123 retired teachers were felicitated by Block Elementary Education Officers (BEEOs). Each of the honourees received a gamocha, a fruit basket, and a citation from the Governor.

Governor Acharya, in his message, said the initiative reflects the deep gratitude of the state towards its teachers. “Honouring our Guru is our age-old culture and also an inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We at Raj Bhavan Assam pray to God Almighty for the well-being of all teachers, our Gurus, who are the creators and guides of future leaders. Their lifelong contribution has laid the foundation for a Viksit Bharat,” he said.

The Varishtha Shikshak Samman Yojana marks the first time such a wide-reaching effort has been undertaken to personally honour retired elementary teachers across Assam, underscoring the state’s respect and commitment to the teaching community.
