Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday said implementation of the various projects worth Rs 4000 crore will be a major game changer for Meghalaya’s tourism industry.

Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said that the projects would include mainly the creation of infrastructure.

“Also major investments are happening in top notch tourism destinations including Umiam, Sohra, New Shillong, Dawki and Garo Hills,” he added.

The minister said that the total amount of Rs 4000 crore is a mixture of state funded projects, funding on a 90:10 basis from the ministry of tourism and some are externally aided projects (EAPs).

“It will be spread as we would need 2 years to complete all these projects and some of them given the working season in Meghalaya they will take more than one fiscal year,” he stated.

Asked, Lyngdoh said, “This will be a major game changer. For instance let me cite the  example of Dawki. It is one of the most visited areas from the tourism point and export point of view but so far we do not have decent accomodation facility there so things like that so once we have major accomodation facilities in such places people will tend to stay back and spend some time there and with the expansion of the highway into a four lane road, it would obviously optimise the potential of Meghalaya both as a trade station and a tourism destination.”
