Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to witness a historic cultural spectacle as 9,648 Jhumur dancers and drum beaters (madal badak) from 800 tea estates perform the world’s largest Jhumur dance at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati on Monday at 5:30 PM.

The grand event, titled “Jhumair Binandini,” is spearheaded by the state cultural department and will be graced by a distinguished delegation of 61 Heads of Missions from various countries. Led by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, the delegation will also include 22 families of ambassadors. Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita will be among the key dignitaries attending the mega celebration.

The event marks 200 years of Assam’s tea industry and aims to highlight the vibrant cultural heritage of the tea tribe community.

“The foreign delegation arrived in Jorhat today and will stay overnight at Royal De Casa and Borgos in Kaziranga. Tomorrow, they will embark on jeep and elephant safaris at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) before returning to Guwahati for the Jhumur dance event,” said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“The objective of this visit is to push for the withdrawal of travel restrictions on Assam. Australia has already lifted such restrictions, marking a major milestone achieved by the Union government,” Sarma further added.

Upon arrival at the venue, PM Modi will greet the dancers and drum beaters while moving around the stadium in a specially arranged vehicle, acknowledging the crowd gathered for the grand event. CM Sarma will address the participants before PM Modi delivers his speech, followed by a cultural presentation showcasing Assam’s rich traditions.

To extend the celebrations beyond the stadium, simultaneous Jhumur dance performances will be held across all 800 tea estates. Those unable to participate in the main event at Sarusajai Stadium will perform at their respective estates, ensuring the festivities reach every corner of Assam’s tea-growing community.

Additionally, during a virtual conference, CM Sarma directed District Commissioners (DCs) to facilitate the live screening of the mega Jhumoir Binandini event in all 800+ tea gardens across the state. Since not all enthusiastic dancers could be accommodated in the Guwahati event, screening arrangements will allow tea garden residents to experience and celebrate the historic occasion from their local communities.
