PM Modi inaugurates Assam’s first Amrit Station at Haibargaon, unveils 103 modernized stations nationwide

In a historic push to modernize railway infrastructure across India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated 103 revamped Amrit stations, including Assam’s first at Haibargaon, during a nationwide event held in Rajasthan on Thursday.
Haibargaon Railway Station, a British-era facility, now stands as the first and only station in the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone to be redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme—a flagship initiative aimed at transforming Indian Railways into a modern, passenger-focused network. The PM also dedicated development projects worth Rs 26,000 crore to the nation, underscoring a bold vision for infrastructure-led growth.
Calling it a moment of transformation, the Prime Minister reflected on Indian Railways’ dramatic progress over the past 11 years. He highlighted the expansion of modern trains like Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat, with nearly 70 Vande Bharat routes improving national connectivity. He also noted that over 34,000 km of new railway tracks have been laid, unmanned level crossings eliminated, and 100% electrification is underway.
The newly redeveloped Haibargaon Station isn’t just a travel hub—it’s now envisioned as a vibrant city centre, featuring world-class amenities, Divyangjan-friendly infrastructure, and a design that blends cutting-edge functionality with Assamese cultural heritage. The architectural theme, rooted in the motto “Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi” (Heritage with Progress), reflects India’s journey toward inclusive modernization.

At the Haibargaon event, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Revenue Minister Keshab Mahanta, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita, and local MPs and MLAs joined senior NFR officials, including General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, attending the main event in Rajasthan, shared that over 1,300 stations are being upgraded nationwide under the scheme, reinforcing Indian Railways’ role in nation-building.
