    The Chief Executive Officer, Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) has informed all residents under the SMB jurisdiction that the Government of Meghalaya, as per Notification on Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, has banned/prohibited the use/stocking and selling of plastic products (having handle or non-handle) having less than 40 microns thickness.

    The list of prohibited items include ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration; plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron and stirrers. The provisions of the amended rules shall not apply to commodities made of compostable plastic.

    Those found, stocking/selling the products shall be penalized and materials stocked or sold shall be confiscated.
