The Assam Royal Global University on Thursday marked World Physiotherapy Day with a special session by Prof. (Dr.) Ali Irani, former physiotherapist of the Indian cricket team and Head of Physiotherapy at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai.

Delivering a lecture on the theme “Physiotherapy – Need of the Society,” Prof. Irani said physiotherapy has moved far beyond post-injury treatment and is now a cornerstone of preventive health, rehabilitation and overall well-being. He explained its role in managing lifestyle disorders and chronic conditions, supporting athletes and sports fitness, improving the quality of life for the elderly and differently abled, and contributing to community health at large.

During the session, he spoke about the history and origin of physiotherapy, prenatal and postnatal care, sports rehabilitation and geriatric physiotherapy. He also mentioned the introduction of the NCAHP Council scheduled for March 2025, calling it an important step for the profession. Stressing the importance of healthy routines, he advised early morning practices for maintaining good health.

Prof. Irani further highlighted physiotherapy’s role in managing both natural and man-made disasters and spoke about its importance in strengthening the pelvic floor. The session included live demonstrations of techniques such as hamstring release and neck pain relief, giving participants practical exposure to physiotherapy interventions.

He urged the profession to focus on awareness, skill-based training and research to meet the evolving needs of society. His address inspired students and young professionals to view physiotherapy not just as a career but as a service to humanity.

Earlier, Prof. (Dr.) Abhijit Dutta, Dean of the Royal School of Medical and Allied Sciences, welcomed Prof. Irani and spoke about the growing relevance of physiotherapy in healthcare. The session drew enthusiastic participation from students and faculty and concluded with an interactive discussion where Prof. Irani shared insights from his extensive clinical and sports experience.
