JOWAI: In order to ascertain the cause of the mysterious death of Riwano Passah of Wah Nangbah, Jowai, the West Jaintia Hills District police exhumed the body of Passah, which was hurriedly buried by his closest relatives in Jowai Presbyterian Church’s cemetery located at Chutkwakhu here this afternoon.

The police sought the permission of the local court to exhume his body as they suspected that Passah was assaulted and beaten to death by some of his relatives at their residence in Wah Nangbah on Sunday’s night but the relatives in order to cover up the crime buried him on Monday, according to police.

The exercise for exhuming Passah’s body started at around 12 pm under the supervision of Executive Magistrate F Basan and adequate police personnel. After exhumation of the body, the medical team deputed by the Court conducted the post mortem of the body as to establish the cause of death.

According to police, they came to know about the incident in Monday’s evening and took prompt action by conducting preliminary enquiry and inspection of crime scene and seizure of suspected items used in the crime. They also filed a suo motu case against Passah’s relative and six persons were detained.
