    The State Level Inter School Athletic Meet 2024, jointly organized by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, and the Meghalaya Athletics Association, kicked off on Wednesday at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), STC Shillong, NEHU, Shillong.

    John F Kharshiing Working President Meghalaya State Olympics Association (MSOA), graced the opening ceremony as the Chief Guest. Also present were K Passah, Assistant Director of the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Darlene M Khonglam, Sports officer; Finely Pariat, Secretary of the Meghalaya Athletics Association, District Sports Officers and technical officials from the Athletic Federation of India (AFI), including Australian Olympian Ian Campbell, who conducted training sessions for other technical officials.

    Addressing the gathered athletes, Kharshiing encouraged them to give their all, emphasizing that Meghalaya is poised to host the National Games in the future. He expressed satisfaction that the annual state games are being held in the state and urged the athletes to carve their niche in their respective disciplines.

    Darlene Khonglam, informed that this year’s event boasts 809 athletes, comprising 397 boys, 412 girls, and 36 team officials. She highlighted that the meet, organized annually by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, aims to groom athletes for competition. It begins with district-level competitions, where promising athletes are selected to compete at the state level—a crucial platform for showcasing their talents.

    Representing their districts, school students will vie for victory in three categories: Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18, for both boys and girls. The competition features seven track events and five field events, offering a comprehensive assessment of the athletes’ abilities.

    The State Level Inter School Athletic Meet 2024 promises to be an exciting event, bringing together young athletes from various districts across Meghalaya to compete in a range of athletic disciplines and showcase their talents. The meet aims to identify and nurture talent from the block level to the district and state levels, with the ultimate goal of producing national and international level athletes capable of competing on the global stage.
