SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has blamed the opposition Congress and “external forces” for spreading misinformation against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) which led to it getting stalled in the Rajya Sabha recently.

“The Congress together with outside forces is behind this misinformation and conspiracy,” BJP National Secretary Rahul Sinha told reporters at a news conference held here on Monday.

Sinha said the bill lapsed in the Parliament because lot of misinformation was spread to mislead the people.

Maintaining that the BJP has not given up on the CAB, he said the party therefore would reach out to the people by creating awareness about the Bill during the Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier, the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government which comprises of two BJP MLAs have strongly opposed the CAB as it seeks to provide legal citizenship to immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

However, stating that the misinformation spread has created a lot of confusion among the people including the Meghalaya government, Sinha said, “The BJP will create awareness to clear all the confusion that the state BJP and its ally NPP have with regard to the bill.”

The BJP national secretary on the other hand admitted that the Bill was tabled in haste and this has also created a communication gap.

“However, dialogue is the way forward to narrow this gap,” he said while claiming that the Bill aims to create “brotherhood” among the people.

Meanwhile, Sinha further expressed confidence that the BJP would come back to power with a bigger mandate after the Lok Sabha polls.
