Opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Thursday asserted the need for the state government to set up more medical colleges in the state.

Raising concern over the issue in the Assembly, Nongthymmai legislator Charles Pyngrope said there is shortage of medical seats in the state.

He asserted that setting up of medical colleges is a necessity in the state.

Mawsynram legislator Himalaya Shangpliang said it is not a bad idea for the government to consider setting up such institutions in order to ensure that the aspiring medical students do not have to go outside.

The suggestion was made when the Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui informed that there is no proposal from the government to set up medical colleges in Ri Bhoi, Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills.

Shangpliang however said the government should have thought of a policy to come up with more medical colleges considering the fact that many students are looking for medical seats outside the state.

Replying to this, Rymbui said that the construction of the Tura medical college is going on.

“Let us first finish this medical college at Tura then we will do the needful as and when funds is available,” he said.

According to him, as of now the government has considered to set up medical colleges only in West Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills long time back.

However due to so many issues, construction of the Shillong Medical College could not be started.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA from Nongpoh Mayral Born Syiem also requested the government to consider setting up of a medical college in Ri Bhoi considering that it is one of the aspirational districts in the country.
