One dead in head-on collision in East Jaintia Hills

One person lost his life after driving his vehicle on the wrong side of the road in a rash and negligent manner, leading to a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle in East Jaintia Hills District on May 2.

Police said a loaded truck bearing registration number AS 01 LC 5896, driven by Samir Malakar of Agartala, was travelling from Lumshnong towards Guwahati.

However, on reaching Wapung, a loaded pickup truck (Regn. No. ML11-6931) driven by Lando Shylla of Lumshnong, coming from the opposite direction at high speed and on the wrong side of the road, collided head-on with the truck.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck driver attempted to swerve to avoid the collision, but due to the speed and recklessness of the pickup driver, the impact was unavoidable.

Police confirmed that the driver of the pickup succumbed to his injuries at Civil Hospital, Khliehriat. The truck driver surrendered himself to the police and was taken for medical examination at the same hospital.

After completing all necessary formalities at the accident site, both vehicles were seized and towed to Kongong Naka for safe custody.
