The National Statistics Office (NSO), Field Operations Division, Shillong, celebrated the 19th National Statistics Day on June 29 to honour the legacy of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, known as the Father of the Indian Statistical System.

Held at the NSO Regional Office Conference Hall, the event also marked the 75th anniversary of the National Sample Survey (NSS), a key pillar of India’s data-driven governance.

Assistant Director Dr Prabhata Das highlighted NSS’s vital role in shaping national policies since 1950, while Deputy Director O Patton underscored its contribution to initiatives like the NEP and SDGs. Officers S Nongkynrih and Ibapynkmen Marwein shared insights on quality fieldwork and the real-world impact of statistical data on schemes such as MGNREGA and Ayushman Bharat.

The event concluded with a quiz competition to promote statistical literacy and staff engagement.
