Chief Minister and National People’s Party national president Conrad K Sangma on Thursday toured South West Garo Hills to seek a mandate for NPP candidates.

At Rangsakona, he clarified on the misinterpretation of Congress party, for their propaganda against NPP by spreading lies that NPP wants introduction of Panchayat Raj.

He informed the gathering that NPP had mooted an idea for funding for councils in Meghalaya in line with the Panchayat system and Municipal Boards.

“During the visit of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to Shillong recently, I had made an opinion that district councils in the State should also be included in the clause for release of funds from the Finance Commission like it is being done for Panchayat and Municipal”.

He further said that because of the NPP government’s intervention, the finance commission has decided to release Rs 700 crore for district councils in the State.

He further said, “I have never demanded introduction of Panchayat System, but have propagated the idea of including district councils also for inclusion under Finance Commission for release of funds”.

Urging the people of Rangsakona to vote for NPP, he said that people of Garo Hills should unite to support NPP, so that the state government can work with district councils to ensure that council is further strengthened.

He also said that GHADC election is like a by-election, the state government is ruled by NPP, and it was important that the ruling party is elected as Executive Committee in the council, so that the Stare can support to facilitate development and welfare interventions.
