Lone Rajya Sabha MP Dr WR Kharlukhi has said the National People’s Party (NPP)-led state government would continue beyond 2028.

He outrightly denied that there is any rumblings within ruling party.

“No (there is no rumblings). This government is going to remain till end of the term and the way the politics is going we will continue again (to form the government in 2028),” Dr Kharlukhi expressed confidence while speaking to reporters on Monday.

On speculation that NPP MLAs in Khasi Hills may switch over to the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) ahead of 2028 polls, the former NPP state president said, “Only if the VPP breaks their principles like they did in Jowai North MDC constituency then that is a different matter. However, their (VPP) principle is not to take any sitting MLAs so if it there is something like that where will these MLAs go? But there is nothing like that.”

“We will see when election comes, if they (MLAs) don’t ask for ticket from us then it is true but to me, there no such things like that,” he added.

If VPP is gaining momentum in the state, Dr Kharlukhi however said, “No, I don’t see it like that. We won the JHADC polls. Here also in the last MP elections, they won 25 seats out of 29 seats and now they have gone down to 17 seats. We have another 3 years before the next election. So, I don’t see that they (VPP) are a threat to us.”

In Jaintia Hills, he said, “For the last two elections, we (NPP) are largest single party in the region. We have the largest number of votes. We are growing and we are maintaining our growth. This time in the JHADC polls, we got 13 and last time we got 12.”

“In Khasi Hills, this time we got 4. The difference is because the MDC constituencies is more or less same like MLA constituencies. Last time in MLA, we got 4. So we still maintain 4. In the coming election I think we are going to improve,” Dr Kharlukhi asserted.

On VPP trying to make inroads in Garo Hills, the NPP leader said, “I think they should try it. When you are a party, try to be a party of the whole state not only of a certain region. So, they should try it is good.”
