NPP state working president and cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak on Tuesday also joined hands in opposing the Assam government’s decision to ban public consumption of beef, saying food habits are a right of every citizen.

“We are democratic country and we are free to eat anything. Food habits are a right of every individual. So therefore I don’t accept the kind of ban on beef in any state,” Marak told reporters.

Stating that food habits are a way of life, the minister said, “For example, we are tribals, we eat so many things. So if you put restrictions on food habits that is not a good thing and is not acceptable at all.

Our right to freedom of speech is also there. The right to economic activities are there. In fact our fundamental rights are being deprived by putting on such restrictions.”
