SHILLONG: The non declaration of the Nongkrem Dance as general holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act by the General Administration Department of the Meghalaya Government resulted in the wrath of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council against the banks in East Khasi Hills District.

The Government has announced general holiday today the 7th November, 2019 on account of the Nongkrem Dance Festival at Smit the headquarters of Hima Khyrim in East Khasi Hills directing all state government offices, magisterial courts and educational institutions to remain closed.

As the Government did not declared the holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act the banks were not covered under the purview of the Government’s order. Thus they opened their shutter this morning and conducts business as usual.

However within a couple of hours, KSU members and the HYC members separately barged in various banks branches in Shillong city and outskirts of Shillong and compelled them to closed down the banks immediately and the banks authorities complied to avoid any confrontations.

The KSU and the HYC closed down the banks on ground that the banks disrespected the traditional   festival of the local people.

According to one bank customer, it is a matter of grave concern concerning the security of the banks as if a group of youths  can barged and create ruckus inside the banks then surely a group of miscreants can enter and loot the banks.
