No room for negligence: Assam minister demands urgent action on flood preparedness ahead of monsoon

With the monsoon season fast approaching, Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika has issued a stern warning against any negligence in the implementation of flood protection measures.
Chairing a high-level review meeting at Jal Bhawan, Basistha, on Wednesday, the minister stressed the need for swift and coordinated action to safeguard lives and property across the state.
The meeting brought together senior engineers, officials from the Water Resources Department, and contractors working under the Flood and River Erosion Management Agency of Assam (FREMAA). Minister Hazarika reviewed the status of flood and erosion control efforts, specifically at 216 vulnerable sites identified through field surveys.
He directed officials to ensure that flood mitigation materials — including Geo Bags and porcupines — are adequately stocked and strategically placed in all high-risk areas. Hazarika made it clear that delays would not be tolerated, emphasizing that accountability will be enforced in cases of non-compliance.
“The department must act with urgency. Lives and livelihoods are at stake,” Hazarika said. He also announced plans for personal site inspections to monitor the pace and quality of ongoing works, urging all stakeholders to maintain close coordination throughout the monsoon season.
Also present at the meeting were Special Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department Syedain Abbasi, FREMAA CEO Dr. Jeevan B., Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, other senior officials, and project contractors.
Hazarika reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to proactive flood management, highlighting the critical importance of timely intervention and public safety.
