    West Jaintia Hills District Magistrate Batlang S Sohliya has imposed Section 144 CrPC prohibiting sand mining and stone quarries along the Myntdu river and on its riverbed.

    The order was issued following directions from the Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, and the Hon’ble National Green Tribunal (NGT) in O.A No. 172/2016 to ensure the effective implementation of the NGT Order against illegal tree felling, sand mining, and illegal collection of boulders from the riverbed of Myntdu and its vicinity.

    The order is also necessitated as the quality of water in the Myntdu River is severely affected day by day due to washing of clothes and vehicles in the catchment areas, dumping of spoils and dirt, illegal collection of sand, stone from the river bed of Myntdu river.

    The order prohibits felling of trees in the in the vicinity of River Myntdu.

    Washing of clothes and vehicles, dumping of spoils and waste material (both solid and liquid) along the course of the Myntdu River, and the disposal of waste/muck from road construction into the Myntdu river also prohibited.
