No more load shedding in Meghalaya for now

Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Power Prestone Tynsong on Monday announced that the four-hour load shedding will be lifted from today midnight.

After chairing a meeting with the officials of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), Tynsong said, “The load shedding will be lifted from today midnight and we will try our best that load shedding will no longer be there even in the near future in the state.”

He said that the MeECL had to take an unpleasant decision to go for load shedding of four hours a day due the recent breakdown of four units. Otherwise during the monsoon season the state generally does not have load shedding at all.

“However, I am happy to inform you that now out of these, two units – one from OTPC and one from NEEPCO – are fully restored,” Tynsong said adding “After calculating all the requirements in terms of million units, the load shedding was accordingly lifted.”

He informed that the engineers and experts are on the job to repair the other two units – one from Leshka and one from Umtru. “I am sure 3-4 weeks from now, they will be able to restore them back,” he added.

When asked, the deputy chief minister said the total requirement of power in the state is 9.95 million units.

“(Of this), 6.20 million units for everyday requirements while 3.75 million units have to be transferred back to power banking,” he said.

Stating that the state is facing a shortage of 1.05 million units of power, Tynsong however said, “For this shortage we are meeting from purchasing from the open market.”

Meanwhile, the deputy CM thanked the residents of the state for bearing with the state government due to these unavoidable circumstances and requested them to continue extending their cooperation and support to the MeECL and its officials.
