No international border should be porous: Mukul

Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Friday said that no international border should be ‘porous’.
Expressing concern over Meghalaya sharing a porous international border with neighbouring Bangladesh in view of the prevailing situation, Sangma said, “Those things have always been taken up with the government of India. We had unfortunately been referring to the international border as far as indo-bangla border as the porous border. No international border should be porous for the security reasons, for the social security and for national security. From this perspective, no international border should be porous.”
Pointing out the danger of allowing smuggling to take place along the international border, the former chief minister said, “It is very dangerous at this juncture when you have this kind of prevailing geo-political challenges. That is why the issue of a few trucks carrying areca nuts which has been spotted by some people including the media, is a matter of concern.”
He emphasized the need to alert the government of India and said, “Government of India should crack a whip including asking the states to pull up their socks while aggregating the state and other authorities.”
Asked, Sangma said he is sure that the state government must have flagged all concerns before the Centre.
“I am sure the government of India is seized with this whole situation and whole development that is unfolding and state has only the responsibility of sharing the inputs, sharing the concerns but at the end of the day the overall responsibility of dealing with all the issues pertaining to geo-politics and international affairs, bilateral affairs between the sovereign countries it is vested upon the government of India,” he added further.
