Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said there has been no explosion of the tanks storing toxic effluents from the uranium exploratory mining in South West Khasi Hills district.

“The first day when this thing came out, we immediately informed the UCIL. We also inform the DC and SP and they have gone to those sites to survey the locations,” Sangma told reporters.

He said the initial report which has come officially to the government stated that there has been no such leakage there.

“There is no such incident that has taken place and there has been no exposure of cracks or explosion of any kind of these tanks,” Sangma added.

Earlier after conducting an inspection at Nongbah Jynrin, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) had demanded the government to order for a proper inquiry into the alleged explosion of the uranium tanks.

According to the president of the KSU-SWKH, Forwardman Nongrem, the team which had conducted the inspection had found that four tanks have developed excessively wide cracks.
