BJP leader and cabinet minister AL Hek on Friday stated implementation of any mechanisms – be it Inner Line Permit (ILP) or the Meghalaya Residents, Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) – should not harass any citizen of the country.

“You can introduce any kind of mechanism – ILP or MRSSA. However, all citizens of India should not be harassed. No human being should be harassed. That is my clear view and clear point. Nobody should be harassed,” Hek told reporters.

He however said that the government is on the job to implement the MRSSA in the state to address the concerns of unabated influx into the state.

As far as the implementation of the ILP is concerned, Hek said that the matter is pending for a decision by the central government.

The state Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution in 2019 urging the Centre for implementation of ILP.

The BJP leader said the state party will support the decision of the state government to ensure ILP is implemented in the state.

Asked if MRSSA is more effective than ILP, Hek said he is not the right person to judge the two.

“Until and unless we implement it, tell me how we will judge it whether it is good or bad. That is not possible to tell until and unless (such) mechanism is introduced (and implemented),” he stated further.
