NFR launches drone-based cleaning drive at Kamakhya station in first-of-its-kind trial

In a first for Indian Railways, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has conducted a drone-based experimental cleaning operation at the historic Kamakhya Railway Station, marking a significant step toward smart, tech-enabled railway maintenance.
The pilot demonstration, conducted over the weekend, focused on cleaning elevated and hard-to-reach areas that are typically difficult to maintain using traditional methods. These included the Kamakhya Coaching Depot Sick Line, Underfloor Wheel Lathe Shed, exterior dome portions of the station, and roof and outer surfaces of train coaches.
The use of drone technology for sanitation operations is a pioneering effort by NFR and aims to boost efficiency, reduce manual hazards, and enhance the overall hygiene standards in line with the Indian Railways’ vision for smart infrastructure maintenance.
Drones equipped with high-pressure nozzles and advanced navigation systems reached structures previously accessible only through scaffolding or manual climbing.
The method significantly cut down the manpower and time required for high-altitude cleaning tasks.
Reduced need for manual cleaning in dangerous locations, minimizing occupational hazards for railway workers.
Drone-based systems use controlled cleaning mechanisms that reduce water waste and chemical runoff.
Officials from NFR noted that the successful outcome of the trial paves the way for broader implementation across major stations and depots under its jurisdiction. The move is expected to transform railway sanitation practices, particularly in the Northeast region, where terrain and weather often complicate manual cleaning operations.
A senior NFR spokesperson commented: “This initiative reflects our commitment to innovation and sustainability. By integrating drone technology, we’re redefining how railway cleanliness is maintained — smarter, safer, and more efficient.”
The move also aligns with the Indian Railways’ larger modernization agenda, aimed at introducing AI, automation, and robotics to ensure better passenger experience and operational standards.
NFR has previously been recognized for embracing cutting-edge, sustainable solutions across its network. From solar-powered stations to digitized ticketing and now drone-assisted maintenance, NFR is setting the pace for other zones within Indian Railways to follow.
If the model proves effective in long-term trials, drone-based cleaning could become a standard operating practice not just for stations like Kamakhya, but also across urban hubs, coach depots, and maintenance yards throughout the country.
