Power Minister AT Mondal has asserted the need to include Sikkim as a constituent member of the North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC).

According to him, the NERPC is likely to adopt a resolution on the matter in its upcoming meeting to be held in Aizawl, Mizoram next month.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Mondal said that Sikkim is tagged with North East and is also being tagged with any department and issue except in power department where it is included in Eastern Zone.

“In my earlier tenure as chairman of NERPC, I tried to bring Sikkim to NE but because of reluctant  by Eastern Zone it could not be done,” he said adding “This time I requested the union power minister that it will be helpful for Sikkim and it will be helpful for North East if Sikkim is tagged with NE, which he told he would look into and he asked the chief minister of Sikkim whether he is willing to be with the Eastern Zone or NE Zone. He (CM of Sikkim) also agreed that he will be (with NE Zone).”

Mondal informed that the NERPC will be having its meeting at Aizawl, Mizoram in June 26 or 27 and said, “There we will take a resolution that we want to have Sikkim in the NE as the chief minister of Sikkim has agreed.”

“I told them to find out whether some old datas are there or not where we have done. They found a letter written in November 20, 2011 to Sushil Kumar Shinde, the then power minister for inclusion of Sikkim as constituent members of the NERPC. Not only that, the subsequent resolutions that have been adopted in the NERPC meetings and letters sent by NERPC, all are there,” he stated.
