Students under the banner of the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) on Wednesday staged a protest against the alleged unfair grading practice by the University, which led to a significant disadvantage on the students’ academic and career.

The Union has demanded the University to immediately withhold the 2nd semester results until the implementation of the relative grading system.

In a memorandum to the NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof P Shukla, NEHUSU said, “It is with this concern that the NEHUSU demands an admendment of the current grading system under concern. The students of NEHU must receive just marks so as to get a fair footing while competing in various fields, be it academic or concerning employment opportunities.”

“The NEHUSU demands for the students of the university – implementation of the relative grading system with immediate effect. (We also demand) withholding the 2nd semester results until the implementation of the relative grading system,” the memorandum said.

It said that the union also demand revision of the results of the previous semesters of the current batch in accordance with the relative grading system.

The NEHUSU said that as per UGC guidelines, the implementation of relative grading system in universities across the country is clearly recognized.

It said that the relative grading system in recommended by AICTE in its document titled “Best Practices in AICTE Approved Institutions” to ensure efficient and effective practice for students academic grade moderation.

“NEHUSU’s demands are well within the frameworks of Higher Education’s governing bodies. Hence, the implementation of the above-mentioned demands can be carried out smoothly as it is not in conflict with prescribed guidelines under concern,” the memorandum added.

It said that the objects of NEHU Act, 1973 states that “the objects of the university shall be to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the hill areas of the Northeastern region, and, in particular their intellectual, academic and cultural advancement.

“Unfortunately, the current grading system of the university is impeding the academic and career growth of the students, hence it is in direct contradiction with the basic tenets upon whcih this university was founded,” the union stated.
