These projects were funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC).
The project for the construction of Boys’ and Girls’ Hostel Blocks at Capt. Williamson Sangma Memorial College, Baghmara, South Garo Hills was sanctioned in June 2021 at a total cost of Rs 1.6666 crore, the NEC said in a statement.
The project was undertaken with the objective of improving access to higher education for students from remote areas of the district. The newly constructed hostels are intended to accommodate students from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), thereby removing a key barrier to pursuing higher education.

This initiative reflects NEC’s continued commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and promoting equitable access to quality education, particularly for underserved and vulnerable communities in Meghalaya, the NEC said.
The project related to the upgradation of Ramakrishna Mission schools was sanctioned on December 22, 2020, at an estimated cost of Rs 4.2997 crore. The project aimed to provide accessible, affordable, and quality education to children from families of marginal workers in remote and underserved areas.
It focused on strengthening school infrastructure to address the high dropout rates and limited access to non-commercial Higher Secondary education in these rural blocks.
With the completion of this project, total student enrolment is expected to increase by approximately 45.2%, enabling around 523 students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families to access higher secondary education annually.
This initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing literacy and educational opportunities in the region, the NEC stated.
