Keeping a close check on inflow of money into poll-bound Meghalaya, election authorities have so far seized nearly Rs 30 lakh cash including Rs 3 lakh which was seized on Friday.

State’s chief electoral officer Fredrick R Kharkongor informed that Rs 3 lakh was seized by the Static Surveillance Team (SST) from a resident of Mynso village at Khliehriat in East Jaiñtia Hills District.

The person has claimed that the money was meant for purchase of a Shaktiman truck, Kharkongor said while adding that the matter has been referred to a committee under the district election officer (DEO) for conducting an inquiry.

Asked, the CEO said so far almost Rs 30 lakh have been seized from the different parts of the state including Garo Hills region.

These include the recent seizure made by the border security force (BSF) along the international border in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills District, Ampati, South West Garo Hills District and East Garo Hills District, he added.

According to him, some of the money seized have been verified and let off (after it was found out that the purpose has no connection with polls).

Kharkongor further informed that huge amount of liquor was also seized in Mawryngkneng village in East Khasi Hills District.
