West and East Jaintia Hills account for nearly 5,000 HIV cases, about half of Meghalaya’s total, said Sandy Tariang, Cluster Programme Manager of the District Integrated Strategy for HIV/AIDS. The figure was revealed during the launch of the Intensified ICE Campaign (IICE) held on Tuesday at Thomas Jones Synod College, Jowai, marking International Youth Day.

Organised by the District Integrated Strategy for HIV/AIDS (DISHA), Khliehriat Cluster, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Thomas Jones Synod College, and supported by the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society, Shillong, the campaign aims to raise HIV/AIDS awareness among youth.

Assistant Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills, Emelya Ch. Momin, said the HIV situation in the two districts is “no longer a threat but a full-blown crisis.” She emphasised sharing accurate information, promoting early testing, encouraging safe practices, and reaching vulnerable groups with compassion.

“HIV/AIDS is not just a medical issue but also a social one, where stigma and discrimination have prevented many from seeking help. A person living with HIV deserves dignity, compassion, and support,” Momin said. She urged youth to be “ambassadors of awareness” to challenge prejudice and promote testing.

Tariang added that the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) initiated the IICE Campaign to close awareness gaps and fight stigma. The campaign will cover around 150 villages through rallies, traditional games, cultural programmes, and outreach in schools and colleges over the next two to two-and-a-half months.

Dr. A. Nongbri, Principal of Thomas Jones Synod College, encouraged students to be disciplined, loyal, and responsible users of technology. She reminded them to honour their parents’ sacrifices and use their youth wisely.

The event concluded with a rally where students carried placards and banners promoting HIV/AIDS prevention.
