SHILLONG: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) State Working President Vijay Raj has decided to resign as Vice Chairman of the State Programme Implementation and Monitoring Committee following opposition from NGOs.

In his resignation letter submitted to the chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday, Raj said his appointment as vice chairman has been opposed by some NGOs alleging that he was the president of the Non-Tribal Youth Union (NTYU).

He said inspite of his clarification that he had never held the post (NTYU president), the NGOs has been continuing their opposition against his appointment to which he is of the opinion that it is hampering the state function.

“So, for the reason stated herein above I hereby submit my resignation from the said post as I do not want the State to suffer, for the interest of which I have been working till date. Inspite of this resignation I will still continue to work for the betterment of the State,” Raj stated in the letter.

Earlier today, effigies were also burnt during a public meeting organised by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) demanding the state government to immediately terminate the appointment of Raj and Pawan Sharma from post of vice chairmen.
