The District Social Welfare Office, in collaboration with the District Administration and the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a closing programme held at the Ladthadlaboh Indoor Sports Hall, Jowai, on June 26. The event marked the culmination of a month-long campaign under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, themed “A National Movement Towards a Drug-Free India” and “Breaking the Chain: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All.”

Throughout June, awareness activities such as rallies, marathons, street plays, competitions, and educational outreach were held in collaboration with schools, colleges, and community leaders to engage youth and raise awareness on the dangers of substance abuse.

Additional Deputy Commissioner D.V. Lyngdoh highlighted the significance of collective action and awareness in fighting drug abuse. She emphasized that June 26 is globally observed to address the serious issues caused by drug trafficking and addiction. She urged students to live by the pledge for a drug-free society and to be catalysts of change.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ishan Gupta addressed the students on the critical choices faced during adolescence, warning them about the influence of drugs and criminal networks. He stressed that addiction is a serious neurological trap and encouraged youth to channel their energies into sports, arts, education, and community service.

District Social Welfare Officer Y. Najiar outlined the objectives of the International Day and shared details of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2020. She stressed the role of prevention, rehabilitation, and community participation in addressing drug abuse, and urged everyone to work together to build a drug-free society.

Barry L. Kharmalki, General Secretary of the Meghalaya State Network of Positive People, shared his personal journey of recovery, inspiring students to say ‘no’ to drugs and other negative influences.

A signature campaign and a drawing competition were also part of the programme, with students pledging their support and winners being felicitated.

The event was chaired by S.M. Lamare, Gender Specialist (DHEW), with the welcome address by Y. Kyndiat and vote of thanks by H. Dkhar, retired Assistant Commandant of the 3rd Battalion.
