Nagaon Citizens’ Forum warns of rising communal threat, forms new leadership to defend minority rights

In a decisive move to counter rising communal tensions and defend constitutional rights, the Sachetan Nagari Manch Nagaon held a general meeting on Sunday and formed a new 31-member leadership committee.
The meeting, chaired by Professor Mojibur Rahman, dissolved the earlier convening committee and laid the foundation for a stronger, more action-oriented structure. Ikramul Huda, a well-known social worker, was elected as the new President. Retired police officer Abdul Hannan Laskar, former sector development officer Abul Hussain, and human rights activist Matiur Rahman were named Executive Presidents, while advocate Nurul Amin took charge as General Secretary.
An Advisory Board was also constituted, with Professor Mojibur Rahman as Chief Advisor. Former MLAs Abdul Aziz and Mojibur Rahman, along with veteran educationist Fazlul Haque Maral, were inducted as advisors.
Forum members expressed serious concern over the growing attempts by “politically influential circles” to stoke communal unrest in Assam. In response, they announced plans to organize a major civic conference in Nagaon. The event will bring together secular and democratic voices to press for the constitutional rights of Muslim minorities, recognized as an integral part of the Assamese community.
In its closing resolution, the Forum called for inter-ethnic harmony and reaffirmed its commitment to peace, unity, and equal rights for all communities. Newly elected leaders Huda and Amin stressed the need for organized civic action to resist divisive forces and uphold the secular fabric of Assam.
