Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Friday threatened to launch a protest against the state government if it fails to rescind its decision to privatise the much-awaited Tura medical college.

Terming it as an “anti-people” decision, Sangma warned that it will have a serious adverse ramification for the future.

“I urge upon people to join me in protest because I will be protesting and I will discuss with the citizens and we will urge upon the government and if the government does not respond positively then naturally we will have to protest,” the former chief minister told reporters.

“As far as I am concerned and those people who think for the secured future for our citizens of the state keeping in mind the interest of our youth and children and generation next, we must collectively pressurize the government to rescind this decision and to proceed ahead to complete the project and establish Tura medical college as a government medical college. No PPP, no privatisation keeping in mind the overall interest of our people in the long term rather from a long term perspective,” he added.

Mukul reminded that the objective of setting up the Tura medical college as a government college is to benefit the youth of the state.

He said there is a big difference between government jobs and the private sector. “Private sector always adopts their hire and fire mode that means there is no social security of the employees, who will be employed in the private sector,” the leader of opposition said adding “Not only that you start with the PPP mode and  subsequently you will convert it into a full fledged private sector. How can you presume and assume that this malafide intention would not be somehow borne in the mind of these policy makers in the years to come. You will never know what type of people will be in the helm of affairs in the government in the future. Therefore, the whole approach of privatization of the government sector will be seen as something normal which is considered as abnormal as far as I am concerned.”

He further demanded, “Therefore, I once again tell the government please stop this privatisation spree, put a brake and rescind this decision.”

“I have seen they have scripted brilliant EOI to enable these private sectors to participate but these are only precursors for future disaster and precursor to create problems of unemployment and accentuate this problem in perpetuity,” Mukul warned.

Asked, the leader of the opposition said that the idea is to ensure government hospitals must be better than private hospitals and government medical colleges must be better than the private medical colleges.

“However, it is going to be disastrous for the future of the state if Tura Medical College is subjected to private investment in any mode whether it is PPP mode or whether it is any other mode of privatisation.”

“I am alarmed and I would like to set this alarm bell to everyone in the state that the incumbent government is in a privatization spree. It is in a privatization spree and it is a very dangerous trend and we must put a brake on this,” he reiterated.
