All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) leader Mukul Sangma on Wednesday cautioned the people against the BJP.

“Today, people have to identify & segregate those political parties who are disguised as Messiah to defend our interests,” Sangma said while speaking at a meeting to welcome several leaders from Assam to the AITC’s fold.

Also present were AITC MPs – Sushmita Dey and Mahua Moitra – and Assam Trinamool Congress president Ripun Bora. The meeting was to strengthen the party’s base in the North East region

Condemning the BJP’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), he said, “Is it not the intent of the BJP to ultimately bring an end to the Assam accord? It is nullified & diluted by the CAA.”

Explaining the monstrosity of CAA, he said, “There is difference between the NRC (an offshoot to implement Assam accord) and the Citizenship Amendment Act. This issue is not confined to Assam. This brought in ramifications to other small states. It includes all the 8 north-eastern states. Therefore, what happens in Assam, draws invariably our attention. I often say, if Assam sneezes, the whole north-east sneezes.”

In conclusion, he said, “The strength that we draw from the huge diversity is under attack. We must fight back! We must demonstrate and send a strong message to the whole nation: when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. This is what Mamata Didi has demonstrated.”
