Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday asked the state government to register a case against the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).

Speaking to reporters, Sangma said that the KAAC chief is trying to add fuel to fire in view of the tension arising out of the recent killing of six persons that include five Khasi villagers and one Assam official, in a firing by Assam police at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills district.

The KAAC chief had alleged that the Khasi villagers in Mukroh village are illegal settlers.

The AITC leader said he had already stated that the whole unfortunate incident which resulted in the brutal killing of our innocent lives in Mukroh is precisely because of this attitude of the government authorities.

Therefore, people of both the state Assam and Meghalaya must know that this is nothing but an offshoot of the impunity with which both the government has been addressing the concerns of the people pertaining to alleged harassment, atrocities of innocent villagers, most vulnerable group of families who are residing in villages across Assam and Meghalaya borders.

“Now when we are trying to see restoration of order because of the effort of the people, you have another man who holds a constitutional position coming and adding fuel to fire,” he said.

Sangma said that the government of Meghalaya should immediately register a case against the KAAC chief for inciting violence.

“It is an incitement; it is instigation to people who are empowered with the so-called authority, that is what is emboldening their law enforcing agencies. So a case must be registered by the government of Meghalaya for inciting the kind of lawlessness, the kind of situation which can unfold because of the irresponsible statement which is intention and provoke,” he stated.
