MPWU to stage protest against privatization of electricity sector on July 9

The Meghalaya Power Workers’ Union (MPWU) has unanimously decided to express solidarity and support against privatization of the electricity sector by wearing black badges on July 9, 2025, during office hours.

The decision was taken at a meeting held on June 20, 2025, in Shillong.

In a statement, the General Secretary of MPWU, K.B Chyne, said the MPWU stands in solidarity with those opposing the privatization of electricity in India, believing that essential services like electricity should prioritize public interest and welfare over profit.

The union demands that the government stop privatization, increase transparency, and protect consumer rights, he added.

According to him, this decision is in support of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees & Engineers and the 17-point Charter of Demands formulated by the Central Trade Unions.

During the meeting, the union took note of a notification issued by the Government of Meghalaya on May 7, 2025, which prohibits strikes in essential services related to electricity.

The union appreciated the government’s prompt action in protecting essential services, particularly electricity, and expressed hope that the government would not compromise with private players in the electricity sector.

The MPWU emphasized that electricity is an essential part of modern life and that its absence would significantly impact the quality of life and hinder human progress.

“After due consideration of the prevailing situation and the process of privatization, the MPWU has unanimously decided to express solidarity and support against privatization of the electricity sector by wearing black badges on July 9, 2025, during office hours,” Chyne said.

“Together, we can build a more equitable and sustainable energy future for India,” he added.
