MPMC demands Assam CM to tender public apology for ‘disgraceful remarks’

The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) on Wednesday demanded the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to tender public apology for allegedly making disgraceful and insensitive remarks, which constitute a direct attack on the dignity, respect, and status of women across the region.
In a statement, MPMC president Joplyn Scot Shylla said, “The statement made by Mr Sarma is not only unacceptable but also reflects a deeply misogynistic mindset, unbecoming of someone holding a constitutional position. His words are an affront to the values of equality, respect, and decency that our democracy upholds.
At a time when the nation is striving to empower women in every sphere—be it education, leadership, or social justice—such derogatory remarks are a setback to the collective efforts of women across the Northeast and the country.”
“(We) demand an immediate public apology from CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. (We also) urge the Election Commission and relevant constitutional bodies to take cognizance of his statement and initiate appropriate action,” Shylla said.
She also called upon women across political lines to stand united against such demeaning narratives that seek to silence and undermine us.
“We also appeal to the people of Meghalaya and the Northeast to reject such toxic political discourse and stand for dignity, respect, and true leadership. Women are not tools for political slander. We are the backbone of society, and we will not be silenced or belittled,” Shylla added.
