Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Vincent H Pala on Monday said he will not give up in bringing back veteran political leader Dr DD Lapang to the Congress.

He was reacting to the statement of Lapang, who is currently the chief adviser to the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, expressing his unwillingness to return to the Congress.

Pala, also Shillong MP, told reporters that the party workers from Ri Bhoi had requested Lapang to come back because he was a mentor to most of them including Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem and Mawhati MDC Charles Marngar.

“(However), I have not met or talked to Lapang personally on this issue. But I will talk to him seriously,” he said.

Expressing confidence that Lapang will change his mind, Pala said, “I am confident that it will depend on the situation, if we do well, Lapang as we know his mind and heart is always with the Congress but because of certain reasons, he left the party.”

The Congress chief further informed that he would soon take up this issue with the party high command.

“I will talk to the high command on this issue. Until and unless I get clearance from the high command, until and unless they agree, I don’t want to say much because I have not talked to him…I am very keen to have Lapang with us,” he said.

When asked, Pala said, “As president, I am not giving up. We also have to discuss in the party with senior leaders as I am yet to call a meeting on this issue. So first will discuss among us and will put a note to the high command and if all of them agree then definitely will do but to me personally I will love to see Lapang comes back with us as he will be an asset for the party in the future.”
