Matsiewdor War Nongbri, Commissioner & Secretary, Government of Meghalaya has informed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be initiated very soon on implementation of experimental regional landslide early warning system.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) will be signing an MoU with the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority.

Speaking as the guest of honour at the National Conference on Advances in Geosciences: New Insights and Sustainable Solutions for Safe Living in Mountainous Regions (AG-ISM 2025), hosted by Geological Survey of India (GSI), North Eastern Region, on Tuesday, she said, “We are looking at signing an MoU very soon on implementation of experimental regional landslide warning system.”

She expressed concern that there is so far no organization that can give an early warning system for landslide and is looking towards GSI to come up with a clear comprehensive plan to ensure there is an early warning system in place.

Stating that coordinated efforts by all stakeholders towards disaster resilience in the region, War said the state government and GSI will spearhead these initiatives especially for landslides with advanced sciences and technology.

Speaking of Early Warning System for landslides, Asit Saha, Director General, GSI,
stated that currently GSI have been issuing operational bulletins for only three districts in India in landslide-prone areas of Kalimpong, Darjeeling in West Bengal, and Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu.

Stating that multiple districts are affected by landslides, he said that GSI has chalked out a programme for the next 4-5 years “to achive a goal where  we will  be able to issue a proper landslide warning through a system which we have developed and the NE states will definitely be a part of it”

The AGISM 2025 conference will focus on critical geoscientific themes and challenges facing India’s mountainous regions, particularly in the North East. The event will feature Sustainable Resource Management, geological innovations for climate action, geotechnologies and environmental solutions, geoheritage conservation, youth engagement & reserach, and exhibition.

This landmark event, organized to commemorate GSI’s 175th anniversary, brought together eminent geoscientists, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to deliberate on geoscience innovations, sustainability, and disaster risk mitigation in mountainous regions.
