Motherhood didn’t deter Sumer to soar ahead & attained PhD

With her sheer determination and hardwork, Wa I Sa Sumer, a mother of five children and a grandmother of two grand children managed to overcome all odds and attained the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy on Political Science Department.
Notably, Sumer a resident of Jowai town in West Jaintia Hills District was conferred the degree of PhD on Wednesday last week by the William Carey University Shillong.
The degree was conferred upon her after her successful completion of her thesis on the topic, “The Impact of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council on Elaka Administration. A study of Raliang and Jowai Elaka’ under the guidance of Prof Soma Bhowmick.
The thesis was examined by Extemal Examiner comprising of Prof. L.S. Gassah, retired Dept. of Political Science, North Eastern Hill University, Dr. Govind Kumar Inakhiya (Associate Professor), Centre for Russian and Central Asian Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
Sumer is the daughter of Dr.Bhomsingh Challam and Sidina Sumer and she tied the nuptials knots with O R Shallam in 1987. Her husband is the former President of Seinraij Jowai .
At the time of her marriage, Sumer had only passed the Pre University Examination or HSSLC as it is know now. Her marriage did not stop her from continuing her higher studies and finally in 1995 she passed the Master of Arts Examination in Political Science department.
Sumer was successful to clear the main examination of the Meghalaya Civil Service in 2000 but she failed to clear the Personal Interview.
Sumer is currently an Assistant Lecturer of Political Science in Govt Girls Higher Secondary School, Jowai. Besides teaching, Sumer is an avid song writer and singer and she also choreographed dance items during Chad sukra festival.
