SHILLONG: As many as 12 MDCs from different political parties including the opposition Congress are all set to soon join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is backing the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) alliance.

Of these, eight MDCs are from the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), three from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and one from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, BJP leader and cabinet minister AL Hek said the eight MDCs of the JHADC which include four from the opposition Congress and the four from the United Democratic Party (UDP) are ready to join the party.

“In fact, they were supposed to officially join tomorrow but the meeting to welcome them has been postponed since the leaders of the party from Delhi are unable to attend due to unavoidable circumstances,” he informed.

Asked, Hek said that the meeting to welcome the eight MDCs of the JHADC will be held on September 7.

The BJP leader further informed that three MDCs from the GHADC and one from the KHADC have also expressed their willingness to join the party. According to him, some of the MDCs are from the National People’s Party (NPP).

“There will be more political leaders who will be joining the party in the coming days,” he said.

The decision of all the four Congress MDCs to join the BJP has come as a big blow to the opposition party as it has been completely wiped out in the JHADC.

To a query, Hek while refusing to comment anything against the Congress said, “The door of the BJP is open to all and we welcome the decision of these MDCs.”
