The Meghalaya Govt on Friday extended the ban of mobile Internet / data services of all mobile service providers for the third time and again for another period of 48 (Forty-Eight) hours beginning from 10:30 am of Saturday in the 7 (seven) districts of Meghalaya namely, West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri – Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills Districts as per provision of Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017.

The ban on mobile internet/data service was first imposed on the morning of 22nd November, last  for 48 hours on receipt of reports from Police Headquarters, Meghalaya, Shillong that untoward incident in Mukroh, West Jaintia Hills, Jowai may disrupt public peace and tranquility, and cause a threat to public safety in West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills.

The Police Headquarters also reported the assault on civilians, arson and damage of public properties occurring in East Khasi Hills District and other districts of the State.

The Government viewed that messaging system like WhatsApp and social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc. are likely to be used for transmission of information through pictures, videos and text, having the potential to cause serious breakdown of law and order. The ban was extended for the second time for 48 hours again on Thursday.
