SHILLONG: The state government has decided to convert the Maxwelton Estate at Kench’s Trace in Shillong into a public park.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by the chief minister Conrad K Sangma here on Monday.

After the meeting, Home Minister James K Sangma said the government is concern about the air quality in the city and felt the need to have an area where people have access to a park.

“This would enable our senior citizens and our youth to have healthy lifestyle. Therefore we have decided to convert the Maxwelton Estate into a public park for use by the general public,” James said.

According to him, the area is measuring around 7 acres.
